Stoneware

SW001 Denis - Quebec City

Minimum Bid: $2500

Range:$4000-5000

Sold: $5300

Many of the most beautiful crocks from Quebec were made and decorated by Orrin Ballard when he worked as a potter in St. Johns QC. Sunflowers are one of his best known and most popular designs. Donald Webster chose to picture one on the cover of his book, Early Canadian Pottery. Crocks decorated with the Ballard sunflower are rare and highly sought-after. We are pleased to offer what is undoutably the best and most monumental example of this rare Ballard design. The flower on this 3 gal jug is huge, covering most of the face of the crock. The manner in which both the flower and the leaves are executed is quite unique. Marked Peter Denis, Cul de Sac Market, Lower Town, Quebec (City). While not marked CE, this is definitely a Canada East era piece. The condition of this piece is near mint. There are a couple of shallow flakes off the mouth. A few potstones to the body, from manufacturing. Perfect beautiful handle. Very clean glaze. The best Quebec merchant crock we have ever offered!

SW009 Hudson's Bay

Minimum Bid: $400

Range:$700-800

Sold: $800

This auction we are pleased to offer two quite different Hudson's Bay crocks. This 1 gal butter crock bears the standard HB Co trademark that was not specific to any one location; these were likely supplied to many of their stores. Crocks with this mark are rare and seldom seen. George Chopping pictures three jugs in his Bottles of the Canadian Prairies, but no other forms. This is a sweet little crock with a great rendering of the HB Co stamp. I believe the lid is original to the piece as it fits like a puzzle requiring just the right position. Near mint with a 1/2" base edge chip front edge. Medalta Potteries piece.
