FJ004 Farrar's Patent Sealing Jar

Minimum Bid: $250

Range:$400-500

Sold: $600

By the 1890s, the Farrar family had been potting in the Richelieu Valley of Quebec for over 50 years. After some difficult times, their potting operations began to expand. Helen Lambart in her publication Two Centuries of Ceramics in the Richelieu Valley (1970) recounts that "[a]t this time a new type of stoneware preserve jar was being developed and selling well." This half gallon pottery jar is the one patented in 1896 by the Farrar Potteries. The closure consists of a broad glass lid secured by an elaborate wire closure. 7 1/2" tall to the rim of the crock. Near mint condition. The crock is perfect. The glass insert has a couple of very small flakes. The wire assembly is intact and in excellent shape. This is a rare jar and the first one we have offered in nearly fifty sales.
